Deeply Rooted: Disrupting Community Violence Using Abolitionist Principles

Join us as we hear panelists discuss different yet interconnected forms of violence:

• The dehumanizing treatment of recent asylum seekers
• Violence against street vendors in Little Village
• Negligence around missing and murdered women, girls, femmes, trans, and gender non-conforming Black, Indigenous, People of Color
• The racist countering violent extremism surveillance framework

Panelists will share their critical analysis, make connections between political struggles against the prison industrial complex, and discuss abolitionist-principled strategies that address the root causes of violence.

Following the panel discussion attendees will join breakout groups to discuss opportunities to work together and address the root causes of community violence. The event will conclude with a community dinner and raffle. Please note that the panel will be the only portion of the event that will be offered virtually via Zoom.

• Fernanda Castellanos, Organized Communities Against Deportation (OCAD)
• Louvenia Hood, Mothers Opposed to Violence Everywhere (MOVE)

Other in-person offerings throughout the forum:  

• Resource fair:  information about local grassroots and campus violence prevention efforts from the following participants: Treatment not Trauma, Chicago Workers’ Collaborative, Chicago Jobs with Justice, SPH Office of Student Affairs and Wellness Initiatives, Mothers Opposed to Violence Everywhere, Block Cop City, Organized Communities Against Deportation
• Care station: goodies to take home such as rad coloring pages, zines and teas.  An MPH/MSW community scholar will also be available to hold space for attendees who may need emotional support.

Venga a escuchar a los panelistas hablar de las diferentes pero interconectadas formas de violencia como:

• El trato deshumanizado que reciben los solicitantes de asilo recientes.

Los panelistas compartirán su análisis crítico, establecerán conexiones entre las luchas políticas contra el complejo industrial penitenciario y discutirán estrategias basadas en principios abolicionistas que abordan las causas profundas de la violencia.

Tras el panel de discusión, los participantes se integrarán a grupos de trabajo para examinar las oportunidades para trabajar juntos y abordar las causas profundas de la violencia comunitaria.
