Spring 2025: Deeply Rooted Initiative Presentation
Jeni Hebert-Beirne, PhD, MPH, Sylvia Gonzalez, MPH, and Melissa Chrusfield from the Greater Lawndale Healthy Work Project presented and facilitated an important discussion of how we were called into action by our community collaborators to host an event titled Deeply Rooted: Disrupting Community Violence Using Abolitionist Principles. The presentation explored how abolitionist principles – focused on challenging inequitable systems and advancing justice – can be applied to public health research, policies and practice in the communities we serve. Additionally, our team shared how the Deeply Rooted initiative has reaffirmed the importance of listening to community and collective decision making on our Project. Presentation slides can be viewed here.

Deeply Rooted: Disrupting Community Violence Using Abolitionist Principles
- In response to our community partners’ request to stay relevant to and address multiple forms of community violence, the Greater Lawndale Healthy Work Project hosted a forum in November 2023 called Deeply Rooted: Disrupting Community Violence using Abolitionist Principles, where academics, students, community members, and representatives from organizations gathered to learn about and discuss abolitionist strategies to support safe communities. Greater Lawndale.
- Four panelists shared their critical analysis of the root causes of violence, making connections between political struggles against the prison industrial complex, and discussing abolitionist-principled strategies that disrupt violence.
- Following the panel discussion, attendees joined breakout groups to discuss opportunities to work together.
- The data collected from the breakout groups was qualitatively analyzed by a group of GLHW team members, and was presented to community-academic stakeholders at the Deeply Rooted Community Share Back to generate feedback.
- A visual note artist was present at the Deeply Rooted Community Share Back to graphically record the dialogue.
