A New Law Aims to Stop Pregnancy Discrimination at Work
The Pregnant Workers Fairness Act (PWFA), a new federal law effective as of late June, mandates employers with 15 or more employees to provide "reasonable accommodations" for pregnant and postpartum workers, closing gaps left by the Pregnancy Discrimination Act. The law covers various conditions related to pregnancy, fertility treatment, and postpartum care, and encourages accommodations such as flexible schedules, temporary reassignments, and time off for prenatal and postpartum needs. The goal is to protect pregnant workers' health and well-being without jeopardizing their employment, address persistent pregnancy discrimination, and improve maternal health outcomes.
