Community health workers, experts in the in-between, fight for their place in the system

The Montefiore Comprehensive Health Care Center in the Bronx, New York is leading a movement to enhance the role of community health workers (CHWs) by incorporating them directly into the health system and solidifying their role as essential public health professionals. CHWs use their life experience and local knowledge to bridge gaps between patients and medical services, and Montefiore's innovative approach integrates CHWs with clinical professionals, offers training and support, and focuses on community-based care to address social determinants of health and health disparities. The National Association of Community Health Workers is also advocating for federal recognition and Medicaid reimbursement for CHW services.
