Worker Centers and Advocates Urgently Request Witness Slips for Key Illinois Legislation

Several worker centers in Illinois are asking the public to submit witness slips for two pieces of state legislation that they say are critical for worker protection. A witness slip is a formal document submitted to a legislative committee to indicate your opinion about proposed legislation. Committee meetings are scheduled for the proposed legislation as early as the afternoon of Wednesday, March 19, 2025.

This proposed amendment to the Right to Privacy in the Workplace Act states that employers cannot impose requirements greater than those required by the Employment Eligibility Verification System and guarantees specified rights and protections to the employee in the case of document discrepancy alerts.

The law also includes provisions concerning the administration and enforcement of the Act by the Department of Labor as well as action for civil penalties brought by an interested party, private right of action, penalties, and review under the Administrative Review Law.

Workplace Extreme Temperature Safety Act | HB3762 (Rep. Gonzalez) Heading link

Over 14,000 Americans have died from heat-related causes between 1979-2022. The proposed Workplace Extreme Temperature Safety Act would establish and set temporary standards for exposures to extreme temperatures and require an occupational temperature-related illness and injury prevention plan be established by rule by January 1, 2025. The law also includes provisions concerning retaliation, violations, penalties, and enforcement of the Act.
