Subcommittee 1: Employer Certification Program

 

The goal of Subcommittee #1 Employer Certification Program is to shift the ecology of largely precarious, local jobs to a landscape of healthy jobs by increasing the number of businesses that apply healthy work principles.

  • Develop and implement an Employer Certification Program where businesses apply and uphold healthy work principles to their daily work.
  • Creating a community-owned GLHW Employer Healthy Work review process for businesses to be certified and establishing an employer advisory committee.
  • Update an employer database for Greater Lawndale and agree on healthy work principles that all Greater Lawndale employers should follow.
  • During the 2023-2024 year, our Subcommittee #1 Employer Certification Program has successfully found a way to continually update an employer database for Greater Lawndale using an active business license database. This information was used to create a “Where Workers Work” map of employers in Greater Lawndale that are categorized by industry type. This mapping practice will serve to identify and quantify job types and locations. View the maps here.

 

  • Subcommittee #1 Employer Certification Program updated census and labor data on work characteristics in Greater Lawndale in order to better understand the impact of COVID-19 in Greater Lawndale. Here’s what was found.

 

  • Using secondary data analyses literature reviews, peer-reviewed articles, and other GLHW findings, Subcommittee #1 Employer Certification Program was able to develop a list of 11 healthy work principles for the certification program.

 

  • Subcommittee #1 Employer Certification Program is currently exploring partnership collaborations with worker centers that have grassroots campaigns aimed at increasing labor standards in Greater Lawndale.
