DALE Program improves workplace conditions for undocumented workers, advocates say

Pedro Manzanares, a worker at El Milagro tortilla factory in Chicago, revealed unsafe working conditions after his coworkers fell ill and died during the COVID-19 pandemic. Today, the working conditions of workers like Manzanares have improved as a result of the Deferred Action for Labor Enforcement (DALE) program, which protects witnesses in labor investigations. The individuals that the government relies on to see and report worker abuse are protected from deportation and other retaliations and receive temporary worker permits.

But, the new conditions of the program continue to raise concerns, as workers must prove the labor violations again for protection renewal and still do not receive permanent protection from deportation.
